What the bridge is
The bridge carries the Trans-Gambia road over the River Gambia near Farafenni. The Point reported in February 2015 that it was designed as a pre-stressed concrete bridge 942 metres long, with a navigation channel 70 metres wide and 16.5 metres high 4.
The same report said the African Development Fund gave a grant of UA 63.55 million, put at about D4 billion. It named a Spanish and Senegalese joint venture as contractor, with a contract signed on 11 November 2014 4. Status: historical.
In October 2023 the African Development Bank said it provided US$102 million in grants for the 942-metre Senegambia Bridge. It said a vehicle crossing now takes 10 minutes, where a ferry crossing could take at least two days 5.
Traffic and journey times
The AfDB said traffic rose from 532 to at least 15,000 vehicles a day 5. Financial Afrik, as reported by Dominique Mabika in March 2026, gave an average of about 530,000 vehicles a year from 2019 to 2023 and average revenue of about 327 million dalasis a year 6.
The same report said Dakar to Ziguinchor, about 450 km, can now be driven in under eight hours. It mentioned occasional delays at border posts 6.

Who sets and collects the toll
In September 2022 The Point, as reported by Pa Modou Cham, quoted the Director of Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Works and Infrastructure. He said the ministry is responsible for tariffs and the Accountant General manages the toll plaza 3.
The General Transport Union (GTU) said the government had agreed and approved a tariff, listed in the table above, but had never put it in place. The director said the two institutions should sit together and agree terms 3.
Land border posts
In March 2024 the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) laid foundation stones for three border posts at Kerr Ali in Farafenni, Amdalai in Lower Niumi and Giboro in the West Coast Region. The Point, as reported by Makutu Manneh, said the US$2.2 million project was funded by Japan and carried out by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) 1.
The Embassy of Japan said a handover ceremony took place in Djiboro village on 26 January 2026. It said the project brought solar power and Wi-Fi for 24-hour service and expanded the MIDAS border data system. It said the posts support the movement of about 820,000 people a year 2.
Disputes and checks at the border
Dubawa, as reported by Mariam Sankanu in September 2024, said the Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) put an e-tracking system on trucks entering The Gambia. Senegalese drivers protested and halted movement on the bridge. Officials of both countries met and agreed to exempt 353 trucks from fees. The Gambia kept its e-tracking system 8.
UK travel advice says drivers crossing a land border in a private vehicle may be asked to pay a vehicle registration fee 9. Australian advice says the land border with Senegal is open and that undeclared landmines are present in parts of the Casamance region of Senegal 10.
