The airport
The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) describes Banjul International Airport as the main gateway for air travel to The Gambia. Its other name is Yundum International Airport 1.
The airport has one terminal building for arrivals and departures. It contains check-in counters, immigration and customs, security checkpoints, duty-free shops and restaurants 1.
Immigration and entry
British passport holders do not need a visa. They receive a passport stamp on arrival that allows a 28-day stay. The passport must be valid for the whole stay 2.
Other nationalities should check the visa rules of the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) before travel. The GID says a visa or entry clearance does not guarantee entry. The final decision rests with the immigration officer at the port of arrival 4.
Entry can be refused to a person on a security watch list or one found in a medical check to have a communicable disease 4.
The government told an ICAO conference in 2025 that it was finalising Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record systems 5.
The arrival security fee
Every arriving passenger pays the US$20 Airport Security Fee, except children aged 1 or under and transit passengers. Payment is at marked kiosks in the terminal in dollars, euros, pounds or dalasi 2.
Visa credit cards are accepted, but card machines are often out of service 2. Have cash ready. The fee is collected by Securiport staff under a government contract, according to the National Audit Office 6.
Health check
Travellers arriving from a country listed as a yellow fever transmission risk must hold a yellow fever vaccination certificate 2.
Customs
The UK government says The Gambia has strict rules on goods brought in or taken out. Anything that may be prohibited or subject to duty must be declared 2.
The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) sets these duty-free personal allowances for each person entering 3:
- 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or a mix in proportion 3.
- 1 litre of spirits or 1 litre of wine, or 24 cans of beer 3.
- 500 ml of perfume 3.
- 2 mobile phones and 1 personal laptop 3.
- Camera drones must be cleared by the Ministry of Information and Communication. Firearms are prohibited without a proper licence 3.
Leaving the airport
The airport is linked to Banjul and other towns by road. Taxis, car rentals and hotel shuttles serve the terminal 1.
